In this article, we will explain, from firsthand experience, how and why attending the intensive summer holiday swim programme delivers results quickly.
Make The Most Of The UK Summer
This is especially true for children and teenagers who join our intensive holiday programme. The summer weather and holidays open up a wealth of opportunities, such as swimming in the sea, lakes or holiday pools. This motivation is evident in our swimming lessons, where participants are eager to learn new skills and make progress. Below are reasons why making the most of the summer transitions into improved results.
-
Many of our swimmers are eager to apply their new skills during the summer holidays. This is especially true if they are staying near the sea or at a water park.
-
There is no school pressure - swimmers can focus on techniques and new swimming skills without the pressure of schoolwork.
-
The summer holidays often involve water-related activities, and less advanced swimmers are keen not to be left out.
‘During discovery calls, many parents tell me that one of the main reasons for joining the programme is to help their child confidently join their friends for summer activities, such as swimming.’ Tara Rahilly, Operations Director.
Small Groups: Continuous Teaching
Swim Generation summer swimming programme classes have a maximum teacher-to-student ratio of 1 teacher to 3 swimmers. Below is a table outlining recommended ratios from Swim England, far greater than our class sizes.
| Category | Reccommended Ratio |
| Non Swimmers / Beginners | 12:1 |
| Improved Swimmers | 20:1 |
| Mixed Ability Groups (not non-swimmers) | 20:1 |
| Children 3.5years to 5years | 6:1 |
The above table shows that Swim Generation operates well within Swim England guidelines, with class sizes significantly smaller and in some circumstances 600% below their recommendations. Below are five reasons why our small ratios accelerate progress for our swimmers:
-
With a maximum of three swimmers per class, the individual attention translates into progress.
-
Our experienced and qualified coaches can observe swimmers throughout the lesson and quickly identify skills and techniques that may require reinforcement.
-
We are often told by parents and students that learning in such small class ratios helps reduce anxiety.
-
Coaches and their swimmers get to know each other more quickly and build rapport. This not only encourages participation but also allows our coaches to identify and target weaknesses.
-
Classes with three or fewer swimmers result in less ‘dead time’, time wasted waiting whilst the coach is teaching others. Parents have often told coaches that, prior to Swim Generation, their children became disinterested and less focused due to ‘dead time’. This is also supported by research from the International Life Saving Federation (Page 117).
Expert Coaches & Feedback
Both the Institute for Swimming and Swim England detail the positive impacts experienced, qualified coaches have on results. All Swim Generation coaches, including our Summer holiday programme, must have the following mandatory requirements:
-
They must hold a valid Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
-
At least 2 years of experience specifically teaching private, semi-private, and in groups.
-
They must hold an NPLQ (National Pool Lifeguard Qualification) or a National Rescue Award.
-
We hold compulsory training days for our coaches to ensure they stay up to date with the latest standards.
‘All Swim Generation Coaches are highly vetted, must meet strict selection criteria, and undergo a comprehensive interview and assessment process. We know our swim school is only as good as our coaches. That is why we put so much time and effort into selecting the best, with proven results.’ Christopher Whitworth, Founder.
Feedback
Our intensive summer courses are not held over a single day or lesson, but over five days with intensive programmes. We have intentionally created this schedule for several reasons.
-
Feedback does not have to wait until the next session (sometimes a week) to help correct any issues.
-
Our coaches are in the water with their swimmers, allowing for direct assistance and hands-on demonstrations.
-
At Swim Generation, our feedback will be entwined with positive reinforcement. We understand the importance of keeping a healthy mindset and maintaining confidence.
Indoor Luxurious Pools
Our pool locations are throughout London, Surrey and Bath. They are all individually selected and must meet our high standards for venues. Below are the benefits offered by our luxury pool locations:
-
Climate-controlled, heated pool venues help relax and create a comfortable lesson.
-
In private settings, there are no background disruptions, allowing for effective communication and concentration. The conditions are also conducive for nervous swimmers, due to the relaxed environment.
-
Pools are selected to suit Swim Generations' small class ratios.
-
Many pool locations have poolside seating, allowing parents to stay close and watch their children.
-
Some pool locations, such as Richmond and Kingston Hill, are in private residences, further enforcing privacy and exclusivity.
