At Swim Generation, we have had thousands of swimmers go through our teenage swimming programmes (aged 12-18), many of whom express a keen interest in becoming lifeguards. Becoming a lifeguard in the UK typically requires holding a National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ), which involves passing both physical and theoretical courses. In this article, we will show firsthand how Swim Generation can help prepare teenagers to become Lifeguards and how our tailored programmes support this process.
UK Lifeguard Requirements
To become a lifeguard in the UK, you need to pass the NPLQ assessment. The assessment is divided into three main areas:
-
Practical assessments that are held in the pool.
-
Lifeguard theory assessment.
-
Assessment of first-air and CRP (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation).
This ensures swimmers are capable of the demands that may be placed on them. The qualification is valid for 2 years and requires a minimum age of 16.
Strong Swimming Foundation
At Swim Generation, our teen swimming lessons follow a structured, progressive pathway that is perfectly aligned with the NPLQ. In addition to developing strong, confident, and technically proficient swimmers, our training encompasses many prerequisites for passing the NPLQ.
| NPLQ Prerequisite | Requirement Details | How Swim Generation Surpasses It |
| Jump/Dive into deep water | Confidently dive or jump into the deep end of the pool. | Safe entry into pools is covered at an early stage with in-water coaching. |
| 50m swim in under 60 seconds | This usually allows any stroke. | Our lessons develop swimmer speed and efficiency with qualified instructors. |
| 100m continuous swim front and back | Not allowed to touch the sides or bottom of the pool | Teenagers in Squad sessions regularly swim 200–400 metres continuously (or more) in a single set. |
| Tread water for 30 seconds | Not allowed to touch the sides or bottom of the pool | Deep-water treading is integrated into advanced sessions, with extended holds and variations. |
| Pool floor dive | Often, to retrieve an object. | Our squad and pre-squad lessons often cover object retrieval. Coaches help teens control breathing and techniques. |
| Climb out of the pool unaided | No use of steps, must be unaided. | This is practised regularly, ensuring teens can effortlessly exit the pool unaided. |
| General fitness requirements | Must be able to handle the demands of life guarding. | Our year-round, small classes ensure excellent physical conditioning. |
Water Safety & Awareness
Water safety is a fundamental skill that is taught at Swim Generation. Below are four ways that the Swim Generation teen programme creates a safety-first mindset.
-
Our pre-squad and squad training regularly takes place in the deep end of our luxury pools. We normalise deep water and help teenagers understand the risks through our STA Level 2-qualified instructors.
-
All our instructors are highly experienced and qualified, with many having first-hand experience as lifeguards, including Sara and Deni.
-
With all-year programmes, our teen swimmers are consistently reinforced with water safety skills. Unlike many other swim schools, we run a 50-week programme, with squad swimmers often attending 2 or more sessions weekly.
-
In safe environments, many of the techniques used in swimming lessons mirror the safety skills assessed by the NPLQ.
-
Unaided pool exits.
-
Deep water swimming (normalisation).
-
We teach environmental awareness, such as scanning the pool, watching other swimmers, and avoiding obstacles.
-
‘One of our main goals at Swim Generation is to provide our swimmers with the skills that help prevent water-related incidents. Water safety and awareness are embedded into every student we teach!’ Christopher Whitworth, Founder at Swim Generation.
Swim Generations Tailored Teen Training
At Swim Generation, we have over 15 years of experience teaching teenagers, and during this time, we have developed a customised teen swimming program suitable for all levels and abilities.
‘Many parents and teenagers have told us that our teenage swimming programme helped set the foundation for their successful transition into becoming a lifeguard.’ Tara Rahilly, Operations Manager.
Below are five ways our curriculum supports the mental and physical aspects of successfully completing the NPLQ.
-
Our lessons teach advanced treading water from an early age.
-
We improve swimmers' stroke technique and efficiency, making the NPQL rescue drills and timed swims easier.
-
With year-round swimming lessons and small classes, our teenage swimmers are physically fit and disciplined.
-
Our programme trains teens to effectively retrieve objects from the pool floor, a key requirement for the NPQL.
-
Safety is a key attribute; water safety is built into the mindset of all Swim Generation swimmers.
Builds Endurance & Strength
The Swim Generation teen programme is designed to help build cardiovascular fitness and muscle strength. As our swimmers improve, they progress through our programme, which gradually becomes more challenging. For example, NPT level 6 (Improve 1) requires swimmers to swim 30m comfortably, whereas NPT level 8 requires 150m.
How Our Lessons Build Endurance & Strength:
-
Many of our staff have been lifeguards, offering firsthand advice on fitness and recovery techniques.
-
Due to small class sizes, teens train more and wait around less. Often, they swim throughout the entire lesson.
-
Our coaches focus on technique to improve efficiency, which, in turn, allows teenagers to swim farther and enhance their cardiovascular fitness.
-
As previously mentioned, as swimmers improve, they advance to the next level, which has higher requirements and further enhances their fitness.
With year-round swimming, highly qualified coaches, and small groups held in warm, luxury pools, this combination helps create physically able swimmers, a claim backed by Swim England and Sport England.
