At Swim Generation, we understand the significance and joy of introducing your baby to the pool for the first time. For many parents, this can be a daunting experience, and they may be unsure about what to use and pool etiquette. The double nappy rule is a common practice in the United Kingdom. It is an effective and proven way to prevent waste from entering the pool, helping keep it hygienic. In this article, we will cover what a double nappy is, how it works, and tips for parents.
What Is A Double Nappy?
The first thing that comes to mind when you hear the term ‘double nappy’ is usually two nappies stacked on top of each other, as the name suggests. A double nappy consists of two separate nappies, specifically designed for pool use. Each layer serves a different purpose. They are used during baby swimming lessons.
The inner layer is designed to capture waste and can be either disposable or reusable. The outer layer forms a secure seal around the baby's body to help prevent leaks. This is also a specialised nappy for pool use. The outer nappy is reusable and can last for a reasonable period before requiring replacement.
Reasons Not To Use Regular Nappies In Pools
Below are five reasons why regular nappies are unsuitable for swimming pools.
-
Regular nappies become waterlogged, uncomfortable, and dangerous.
-
When nappies become overloaded with pool water, they can burst, releasing debris into the pool.
-
Many pools do not allow the wearing of regular nappies.
-
When soaked, they lose their ability to contain waste due to sagging.
-
Regular nappies aren't designed for pool use, so they can cause irritation and rubbing on the baby's delicate skin.
Note: At Swim Generation, your baby’s safety is our top priority. A regular nappy will become waterlogged immediately and swell up to four times its size. This extra weight makes it dangerous.
Eco-Friendly Solutions
We are passionate about eco-friendly practices, and there are plenty of eco-friendly double nappies on the market. In the UK, over 3 billion nappies are sent to landfill every year (according to NappiCycle, a UK-based nappy recycling company). There are three main eco-friendly options available.
-
All-in-one reusable nappies feature a 2-in-1 design and meet the necessary standards.
-
A combination of reusable inners and reusable outers.
-
There are also reusable inner nappies that can be used in conjunction with a neoprene second layer.
5 Tips For Outer Nappy Care
There are a few simple steps to help extend the life of the outer-layer nappy. As a swim school, we receive a lot of feedback from parents about this. They are designed to last, but by following these easy steps, you can keep them in good condition for longer.
-
After each swim, ensure you rinse them thoroughly with fresh water to wash away chemicals that could cause damage.
-
When washing, avoid using water that is too hot, as it can damage the membrane.
-
When drying, avoid using a tumble dryer, as the heat can damage the material.
-
Keep checking the nappy's elasticity; if there is no tension or ping when pulled, it is likely to let waste seep through.
-
After use, if you cannot wash them straight away, store them in a ‘wet bag’ to allow air to flow and help prevent mould.
