Teenager’s Guide to Overcoming Water Anxiety

2026/03/20

Feeling uneasy about entering a pool is common among teenagers. According to 1Swim England, nearly one in three children leaving primary school cannot swim 25 metres. At Swim Generation, we’ve spent nearly 15 years bridging this gap, proving that water anxiety isn't a permanent barrier, but a hurdle we can help you clear. We have seen firsthand how ‘water anxiety’ in teenagers can arise from various reasons, such as negative past experiences, parents who do not swim, or limited opportunities to learn. Our highly experienced and supportive coaches have helped teenagers build confidence in the water and enjoy the freedom and health benefits that swimming offers through our teenagers' programme.

Teen Water Anxiety Signs

At Swim Generation, our experienced, fully qualified coaches have helped hundreds of teens aged 12-18 overcome these fears through private and small-group lessons in luxury settings across London and Surrey. We understand that overcoming anxiety requires patience, compassion, and professional guidance. Below are 5 signs of anxiety we've observed over the years; some are very subtle; however, it's crucial for our coaches to recognise and address them before they manifest.

  1. Avoidance: This is quite common, with teenagers making excuses not to enter the water and wanting to sit out the lesson.

  2. Breathing/Physical Symptoms: Heavy breathing upon entering the pool area, along with trembling and sweating.

  3. Visible: Sometimes the signs are obvious, such as crying or appearing confused out of fear.

  4. Edge of pool: A reluctance to let go of the pool's edge; this can also occur in the shallow end.

  5. Aid Dependency: An overdependence on swimming aids, with immediate fear of the thought of them not being available or close by.

One of the main benefits of enrolling in a reputable swim school like Swim Generation is that the instructors are in the pool with their students, and class sizes are kept small. Combined with fully qualified, experiences and vetted coaches, we can help teenagers overcome these fears.

It Is Never Too Late

When speaking to parents and teenagers, we often hear that they have ‘missed the boat’ and it's too late to learn. We know this is not true, as we have helped countless teenagers overcome their fear of water and become competent swimmers.

‘Many older teenagers come to Swim Generation with no swimming experience and a fear of water. It is never too late to overcome their fears; they just need the right guidance and environment.’ Christopher Whotworth, Founder, Swim Generation.

Many teenagers feel self-conscious and anxious when learning to swim; however, there are some benefits to starting later.

  • As a teenager, your brain is more evolved and has a better understanding of the physical requirements and logistics of swimming styles.

  • It is a low-impact form of exercise that does not put strain on your muscles and joints.

  • Self motivation as you are at the swimming classes by your own choice to overcome anxiety and learn to swim.

  • A better understanding of the safety and risk associated with water.

Adult Style With Dignity

Every coach at Swim Generation must hold a Level 2 qualification from either Swim England (SEQ) or the STA (Swimming Teachers’ Association). All our coaches are highly experienced and fully understand how to work with aquaphobia and water anxiety.

‘With hundreds of hours of experience specifically helping nervous teenagers, our teenage coaching staff understand that building confidence is just as important as building a stroke.’ Tara Rahilly, Operations Manager.

Our luxurious pool locations and the small class sizes help create a relaxed, tension-free environment. We understand that teenagers want to be treated with dignity and as adults. Below are five techniques that instructors can use to foster respectful and age-appropriate learning.

  1. Empathy coaching: All our coaches are trained to listen without judgment. Their coaching methods help build trust through a supportive and patient approach.

  2. Water Partnership: Coaches are in the water with anxious students, offering hands-on support and demonstrative teaching.

  3. Peer Communication: Coaches communicate with teenagers as young adults in a professional and encouraging manner. There is no ‘kiddy’ dialect.

  4. Focused Environment: Lessons are held in small groups, with no ‘crowd’ noise, creating a calm and focused environment.

  5. Autonomy: Coaches will openly explain lessons, respecting boundaries, and teenagers can always choose to say they're not ready yet.

Privacy With Small Groups

At Swim Generation, we deliberately keep our class sizes small because we know from personal experience that it helps students learn faster and is much better at supporting teenagers in overcoming their fears. There are no crowds watching, and no other swimming lessons occurring at the same time. Consistent feedback from parents and students consistently tells us that this kind of environment helps improve focus and, ultimately, progress.

Roadmap Goal Setting

A structured swim programme with a clear roadmap has been proven to boost success rates, supported by the 2Swimming Teachers Association. This is why Swim Generation provides a clear roadmap and framework. We know firsthand that reducing the fear of the unknown helps lower anxiety and build confidence, which is crucial for teenagers who are anxious around water. Another advantage of a roadmap is that students can visually see and track their progress.
